There are several types of meningitis that can affect travellers, including meningitis A, C, W, and Y, all caused by bacteria known as meningococcal strains. The MenACWY vaccine is administered as a single injection in the upper arm and provides protection against four strains of meningococcal bacteria responsible for meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia): A, C, W, and Y.
Certain countries, such as Saudi Arabia, require travellers to present a meningitis ACWY certificate before entry, particularly for events like the Hajj pilgrimage where vaccination is mandatory. The certificate is valid 10 days after vaccination.
For travellers heading to high-risk areas, it's recommended to receive the vaccine at least two weeks prior to departure.
